Hide “Water Amount” field and “Add Pours” button from the brew form when espresso is selected #1

open opened by davidcel.is

I noticed yesterday that you’ve started adding some espresso-specific fields to your brew lexicon, which is awesome! I had a quick suggestion based on this for your brew form; now that there’s a field for yield when brewing espresso in grams, I think that the “Water Amount” field only really makes sense for pour-over since most espresso machines are a black box with regards to how much water’s actually getting used. IMO, both that and the “+ Add Pours” button could be hidden if espresso is chosen as the brew method.

These are good suggestions! I think water amount will stick around since that is mostly there to track input (which seems like something you'd want to keep track of for every method?), but hiding pours for espresso is a good call-out. The extra info system is still pretty underdeveloped, so suggestions for how it could/should work are extremely helpful!

What about moving water amount into the pourover params? Alternatively, maybe this is more of a user interface issue than a lexicon issue. I think my main qualm with the way things are right now is that, for espresso, "Water Amount" and "Yield" are functionally the same piece of information. Unless you're brewing with a manual lever machine, the input water gets pumped in by the machine and isn't really tracked or trackable. The output is the only thing you can really control. I don't brew with a manual lever, so I might be wrong, but I think that even in that case you just fill up the water chamber and stop pulling when you've hit your desired yield.

So, either way, I think either "Water Amount" should just be visually renamed to "Yield" for Espresso, or it should be in the pour-over parameters instead of the global brew parameters. Given most users won't be interacting with the lexicons, it might make most sense for "Water Amount" to be global and just renamed depending on the brew method, but I'd leave that up to you 😅

Hmm, these are good points. I'm not sure about lever espresso (I think I saw somebody log water amount with a flair, but that might have been before I added the espresso specific details) but I think it would be reasonable to move water amount to the extra details sections by brew method (or maybe just hide it away when an espresso brewer is selected). To be honest, I don't think pourovers care about this field either since pours are preferred. I think most of the other methods would care about water amount though, so maybe worth adding via details sections for those methods. I don't love that this would be a breaking(ish) lexicon change, but probably worth doing, especially for when the alpha is dropped from the lexicons
