33 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:52.000 For years people were able to publish things and the distribution mechanism. 34 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:56.000 Whether it was a physical relic that was put on people's door steps or delivered in their mailboxes. 35 00:07:56.000 --> 00:08:00.000 Or it was broadcast across spectrum in a matter of ways. 36 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:02.000 You could presume out it goes. 37 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:11.000 For the people constructing the news inside the newsrooms, whether they are reporters working in a city newsroom, 38 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:14.000 or whether they are foreign correspondent filing dispatches, 39 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:18.000 to think about what it means to gather the information and get it out to folks in that product sense, 40 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:20.000 was a wildly new idea 15 years ago. 41 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:24.000 The three of us meet at the Washington Post around 2010 doing that kind of work. 42 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:26.000 That's very blog era internet, right? 43 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:30.000 Liz actually was the celebrity blogger for the Washington Post in 2010. 44 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:32.000 That's when we met her. 45 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:34.000 She worked for a product called Celebritology. 46 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:38.000 She would put out 5, 7, 12 blog posts about whatever is going on in the celebrity world. 47 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:40.000 It was that version of internet. 48 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:44.000 Ryan and I were on the first version of an audience team at a newsroom. 49 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:46.000 Fast forward to today. 50 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:48.000 All three of us spent 20 years working in these places. 51 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:50.000 Our bios are on there. 52 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:55.000 In today's context, Liz has an amazing project called Project C, Project Creator. 53 00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:59.000 In Project Creator, Liz in the last year and a half has just a mouse and butter, 54 00:08:59.000 --> 00:09:03.000 churns herself, this amazing community of people who are independent journalism creators, 55 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:07.000 building their own products, building their own business models, solo, preneur, small teams. 56 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:09.000 It's an amazing community of folks. 57 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:11.000 It's Liz's work primarily. 58 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:15.000 Ryan recently finished out a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard studying creator economy, 59 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:19.000 getting very academic about it, rolling off of a great tenure at Axios, 60 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:22.000 where he was trying to figure out that Axios model of smart brevity. 61 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:24.000 How do you take that to the local communities? 88 00:10:27.000 --> 00:10:28.000 Cool. 89 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:34.000 And just real briefly, right, to remind ourselves, you know, a government-placed whistleblower 90 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:35.000 has this information, breaks it out. 91 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:38.000 It's one of the most seminal stories of our lifetime, 92 00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:41.000 is that this person with bravery and a lot of this stuff kind of going on, 93 00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:42.000 reveals their story. 94 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:45.000 The Washington Post and The Guardian were the two newspapers who got that information first. 95 00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:49.000 When I was sitting in the Washington Post newsroom, we knew there was a big story happening. 96 00:10:49.000 --> 00:10:51.000 You know, newsrooms are complicated. 97 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:54.000 Any institution you work in, any kind of organization, right, 98 00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:57.000 there are different nodes and networks and layers kind of what's going on over there. 99 00:10:57.000 --> 00:11:01.000 When this story happens, Marty Barron, our historically, you know, incredible, 100 00:11:01.000 --> 00:11:04.000 like visionary editor who handles, like, big, you know, news stories, 101 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:07.000 his office has lots of senior editors buzzing into it, 102 00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:09.000 and it has the investigative reporters going in. 103 00:11:09.000 --> 00:11:12.000 If you work in a newsroom, you kind of learn to follow the foot traffic. 104 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:14.000 You can kind of figure out something's happening here. 105 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:16.000 You know, if you see a bunch of support reporters going in a certain direction, 106 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:19.000 you can kind of presume maybe there's a, you know, game kind of going on. 107 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:22.000 If you see a bunch of investigative reporters constantly going to Marty's office 108 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:26.000 with growing kind of rapidity for a couple days, you're thinking, okay, 109 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:28.000 like something's kind of going to happen over here. 110 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:30.000 At one point in time, we later learned there was this air-gapped computer 111 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:32.000 that Bart Gilman, the reporter working on this, had put into a room 112 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:35.000 that only people who were at certain clearance could go into. 113 00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:37.000 Because we kind of moved further with audience development, 114 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:39.000 our social editor was allowed to read the story, 115 00:11:39.000 --> 00:11:42.000 which was actually newer for us in 2011 for TJ to go in and read the story 116 00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:43.000 and kind of know what to do. 117 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:45.000 So we published the story. It's going great. 118 00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:47.000 You know, it's actually days of stories kind of rippling out. 119 00:11:47.000 --> 00:11:49.000 There's kind of feedback loops of like, we have this information, 120 00:11:49.000 --> 00:11:51.000 will another person give us more information? 121 00:11:51.000 --> 00:11:53.000 That's how the news breaks out. 122 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:55.000 As this is happening, stories are doing great, 123 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:57.000 but we're noticing this trend that like by the afternoon, 124 00:11:57.000 --> 00:11:59.000 the story is buried in Google News. 125 00:11:59.000 --> 00:12:01.000 And so in 2011, here we are publishing scoop after scoop, 126 00:12:01.000 --> 00:12:03.000 the Guardian's publishing scoop after scoop, 127 00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:05.000 and by two in the afternoon, you go to Google News, 128 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:08.000 and the Huffington Post is there, or Buzzfeed is there, 129 00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:11.000 and we had kind of learned a few tricks along the way. 130 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:13.000 One trick was we called self aggregation, 131 00:12:13.000 --> 00:12:15.000 or what we would in turn joke, we'd call them SEO bombs. 132 00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:16.000 I'm seeing and nodding. 133 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:19.000 Can I ask, have you had this experience in newsrooms you've been in? 134 00:12:19.000 --> 00:12:23.000 I mean, I have to be the news group that it's been your time to do that. 135 00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:25.000 We'll get to that in a second. 136 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:27.000 So on the right hand side over here, 137 00:12:27.000 --> 00:12:30.000 God, I wish I could have found the original like screenshots I had from years ago, 138 00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:34.000 but we had a 22 year old, you know, like junior reporter who was fabulous. 139 00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:36.000 Max was a great, great reporter. 140 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:39.000 But after a couple of days, I said to Marty, you know, the traffic that, 141 00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:41.000 you know, the audience is coming in, but we're losing the afternoon. 142 00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:42.000 We've done this trick. 143 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:45.000 We've done this like self aggregation, the search bomb, 144 00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:47.000 where we literally have a file ready. 145 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:49.000 We published the story in the morning, 146 00:12:49.000 --> 00:12:51.000 just like any newspaper would because it had to go in the morning's paper. 147 00:12:51.000 --> 00:12:55.000 By the afternoon, the algorithms were looking for that fresh story. 148 00:12:55.000 --> 00:12:57.000 We'd say, you know, we see the aggregators beating us. 149 00:12:57.000 --> 00:12:59.000 What if we just aggregate ourselves and kind of did something? 174 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:03.000 We're good at gathering information, we're good at storytelling, 175 00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:05.000 we're good at like, you know, sourcing, 176 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:09.000 but what's the new thing sound for them, right, to turn into a podcast company? 177 00:14:09.000 --> 00:14:11.000 I think they've been wildly successful at it. 178 00:14:11.000 --> 00:14:14.000 To show you a less than positive experience I had in this idea 179 00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:16.000 of transformation product development, 180 00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:18.000 I was in NPR for the years on the slide over here. 181 00:14:18.000 --> 00:14:21.000 I found myself for a long time thinking, here I am at NPR, 182 00:14:21.000 --> 00:14:24.000 and I was seen as like a newspaper guy, which was very funny to me 183 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:27.000 to spend these years at the Post and the Times, like Mr. Digital Guy. 184 00:14:27.000 --> 00:14:30.000 Here I am at the broadcaster being the newspaper guy. 185 00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:33.000 It took me months to figure out why NPR, 186 00:14:33.000 --> 00:14:36.000 most people here are familiar with the American, you know, 187 00:14:36.000 --> 00:14:40.000 public broadcasting system, has a series of amazing radio broadcast programs, 188 00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:42.000 has a series of amazing podcasts. 189 00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:44.000 If you go to their website, it's filled with news articles 190 00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:46.000 that look like newspaper articles. 191 00:14:46.000 --> 00:14:49.000 They're inverted pyramids that, you know, they have the facts at the top, 192 00:14:49.000 --> 00:14:52.000 they kind of store it down, roughly 600 words to 1500 words. 193 00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:54.000 First I didn't think much of it, but as I kind of spent more time 194 00:14:54.000 --> 00:14:56.000 inside the organization, I thought, this is interesting, 195 00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:58.000 like, this place has been around for 50 years. 196 00:14:58.000 --> 00:15:00.000 People write radio scripts. 197 00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:02.000 Scripts are very different than stories. They're a lot more narrative. 198 00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:04.000 They kind of have more voice in it. 199 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:06.000 And it took me months to kind of understand, they did this 200 00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:09.000 because they hired newspaper people to make their website for them. 201 00:15:09.000 --> 00:15:12.000 For that strange reason, NPR.org, Tyler, you're shaking your head, 202 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:14.000 because you spent time there as well, right? 203 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:16.000 The amount of time you spent in this place thinking, 204 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:19.000 why did these people whose genius is getting information, 205 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:22.000 whose genius is storytelling, and NPR specifically, 206 00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:24.000 their genius is audio storytelling. 207 00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:27.000 They can kind of find sound that is wrestling in the background, 208 00:15:27.000 --> 00:15:29.000 and the right voice is that kind of in combination. 209 00:15:29.000 --> 00:15:32.000 Like, to take from Aaron's amazing presentation she just gave, 210 00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:35.000 what's the register of conveying information? 211 00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:38.000 NPR, from an audio perspective, right? Legendary. 212 00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:40.000 Why were they making newspaper articles on websites? 213 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:43.000 You know, it's confusing me, so it's been a couple years saying, 214 00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:45.000 why can't these radio scripts, which are very narrative, 215 00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:48.000 turn into live blogs, which was my great challenge there. 216 00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:49.000 Eventually we did it, which was amazing. 217 00:15:49.000 --> 00:15:52.000 But again, so much retrofitting, so much of like, 218 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:54.000 what is this institution doing in the first place 219 00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:56.000 towards where it could kind of go afterwards. 220 00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:58.000 And so that's my experience in those different places. 221 00:15:58.000 --> 00:16:01.000 I mean, the real big takeaway is whatever publisher I was at 222 00:16:01.000 --> 00:16:03.000 or other people may have been at certain points in time, 223 00:16:03.000 --> 00:16:06.000 we're looking at 20 plus years of these institutions 224 00:16:06.000 --> 00:16:10.000 being filled with wildly talented people at gathering information, 225 00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:12.000 at storytelling, constantly trying to figure out 226 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:15.000 how to get that information to people through an aggregation era 227 00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:17.000 that just destroyed them, that destroyed the industry, 228 00:16:17.000 --> 00:16:21.000 it destroyed so many different disciplines kind of within the industry. 229 00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:23.000 I could get lost down that part, it's a lot of trauma. 230 00:16:23.000 --> 00:16:25.000 The one thing I want to convey to this space 231 00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:28.000 is just to know in the journalism industry, in the media industry, 232 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:29.000 that trauma is real. 233 00:16:29.000 --> 00:16:31.000 The people who raise their hands can all think of the people 234 00:16:31.000 --> 00:16:34.000 who are not in this room, who are at other conferences 235 00:16:34.000 --> 00:16:35.000 or trying to do other projects right now, 236 00:16:35.000 --> 00:16:38.000 who still lament the fact that they can't work on their story 237 00:16:38.000 --> 00:16:40.000 for X amount of time or that there's not as much love 238 00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:42.000 of the craft of this or that. 239 00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:44.000 But the takeaway I hope for this conference kind of going forward 240 00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:46.000 is the concept of survivors, of the embers, 241 00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:48.000 of like what's left from this. 242 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:50.000 And I want to talk about very specific survivors. 243 00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:52.000 I have a few more I need to go through this presentation. 244 00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:54.000 One, Lauren, sitting right over there, 245 00:16:54.000 --> 00:16:57.000 we'll be up here later to talk a little bit about her journey 246 00:16:57.000 --> 00:17:02.000 with Local News International, her six month old company, Lauren? 247 00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:03.000 Is that fair?
