3344-\p{Currently, I sing with the Choir of [All Saints Ainslie](https://allsaintsainslie.org.au), located near my home in Canberra. We sing for most of the weekly Sunday Eucharist services as well as semi-regular Evensong services. I am also available for liturgical singing in and around the Canberra area. Please [get in touch](loc-0009) if you are interested. When I'm travelling away from Canberra, I have on occasion sung with the choirs at [St Peter's Eastern Hill](https://www.stpeters.org.au/) in Melbourne, [St. Michael and All Saints](https://smas.church/) and [Old St. Paul's](osp.org.uk) in Edinburgh, and elsewhere. }

5566\p{I began my musical career as a treble in [St. Mary's Cathedral Choir](https://cathedralchoir.sydney/), Sydney at the age of 10. At that time, St. Mary's was under the direction of David Russell, who encouraged me to pursue my interest in medieval liturgical music. I studied Gregorian Chant semiology and performance, both independently and under the tutelage of Dr. Neil McEwan AM.}
7788-\p{From 2006-2010 I led the Schola Cantorum at St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, performing the propers of the mass every Sunday. I also performed occasionally with many other choirs, including: the Choir of [Christ Church St. Laurence](https://ccsl.org.au/) in Sydney, the [Australian Brandenburg Choir](https://www.brandenburg.com.au/), and others. After Pope Benedict XVI's \em{Summorum pontificum}, I ran a Schola Cantorum to assist in the performance of chant propers and ordinaries in Latin masses around Sydney and later in Edinburgh, after I moved there.}

55+\p{As part of my embrace of well-designed old Mac software, I've started using [TextMate](https://macromates.com/textmate/) again. I made a bundle for building Forester forests that supports completion using \code{forester complete} (not LSP, as TextMate predates that).}
66+\p{The bundle can be downloaded from my [git repository on tangled](https://tangled.org/liamoc.net/forester.tmbundle).}

22+\title{Old-fashioned Mac Software still unbeaten}
33+\author{liamoc}
44+\date{2026-03-08}
55+\p{Growing increasingly frustrated with the Apple mail client's seemingly unfixable inability to search for emails \em{I just read}, I made the switch to [MailMate](https://freron.com/), a good old-fashioned Mac OS X-style app with a lot of useful features, good performance, and, most importantly, \em{working search}. Of course, ANU in their infinite wisdom have not seen fit to bless MailMate as an allowed client on their OAuth server, but this is nothing that a little [davmail](https://davmail.sourceforge.net/) can't fix... }
66+\p{In general, the quality of software on the Mac is getting worse, primarily because a large amount of it isn't even \em{for the Mac} (and secondarily because Apple themselves are enshittifying their software and their design guidelines). I'm tired of running 18 instances of Chromium to do basic tasks. This is why I continue to use [Nova](https://nova.app/), [TextMate](https://macromates.com/), MailMate, etc. I would use [Orion](https://orionbrowser.com/) too, except for its jankiness and poor performance compared to [Zen](https://zen-browser.app/). The other major motivation is my aversion to the dreaded bots and those who use them, which is why I moved away from ghostty and to [alacritty](https://alacritty.org/) lately, although I'd welcome suggestions there. }
