22+title: My first impressions of Palworld
33+date: 2024-01-21
44+---
55+66+I have no idea how to describe
77+[Palworld](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1623730/?curator_clanid=4777282&utm_source=SteamDB)
88+adequately other than it is a miracle of game design that it works as
99+well as it does. On paper, this game should be bad. It shouldn't work
1010+at all. It should have a bunch of attempts at game design that don't
1111+work together and the game should fizzle out into irrelevance like all
1212+the others in the same category. This game should just be too damn
1313+ambitious to work.
1414+1515+Somehow, everything works. It doesn't just work, it works VERY WELL.
1616+Everything flows together and all the mechanics feed into eachother.
1717+It's all the addictive qualities of Factorio, Ark, Fortnite, and more
1818+all in one. On the weekends I normally catch up on anime, but I am now
1919+very behind because of how much time this game has been sucking up.
2020+2121+If you want to see how incredibly unlikely the success of Palworld
2222+was, check out [this post by my friend
2323+Mystes](https://cohost.org/mystes/post/4226698-i-m-in-love-with-pal)
2424+where it describes the series of fortunate events that lead to this
2525+game landing the way it did. It's nuts. This game is the best kind of
2626+anomaly.
2727+2828+There's some controversy about the fact that you can catch Palapagos
2929+residents in Pal Spheres, with all of the normal effects in the
3030+process, but I think that this is really the game taking its lore
3131+seriously and presenting it to the player as it would be in the world.
3232+In the Pokémon games, most of the gorier Pokédex entries point to the
3333+realities that this game portrays.
3434+3535+If you lived in a world where cows were moe blobs that make cute
3636+noises, you'd probably be fine with butchering them for dinner. Either
3737+that or you'd live in a system such that it would be very okay and
3838+easy to do so.
3939+4040+It's really easy to compare this to Pokemon, but I think that it's a
4141+lot more fair to compare it to RimWorld and Ark: Survival. This makes
4242+the Pokemon games look like Monster Hunter. Looking back at Pokémon
4343+Legends Arceus, I think that the Pokémon games are probably going to
4444+become more like Monster Hunter in the long run. Monster Hunter is
4545+incredibly fun to play with friends and overall it's got really
4646+detailed mechanics. The main difference with this and Pokémon is that
4747+you can theoretically go for a very long time without engaging with
4848+the monster taming mechanic. You'll have challenges getting past Zoe,
4949+sure, but you'll be able to do it.
5050+5151+For an "early access" title, this is a remarkably polished and stable
5252+experience. This is the best UE5 game I've ever seen run on handhelds
5353+like the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally. The only complaints I have are
5454+things that probably can be fixed with time and polish. The fact that
5555+they've sold so many units already means that this studio will have
5656+the resources to bring this to completion. I'm confident that the core
5757+of this game is good enough that all they need to do is fix lots of
5858+little issues with the implementation.
5959+6060+When can you say that a new game this decade shipped with dedicated
6161+server software? That you could host yourself, and type in the direct
6262+IP of a server to connect to it, without having to do matchmaking or
6363+suffering through abortions of lobby systems? This game is amazing.
6464+6565+It's seriously good. I don't know what else to say other than with
6666+friends it's an amazing way to manufacture brand new sentences that
6767+become memes.
6868+6969+If this keeps getting better, I could easily see it being game of the
7070+year. I'd be amazed if it doesn't win something in The Game Awards
7171+this year. It sets the bar very high and I think they'll see it to
7272+fruition.
